MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD

March 30, 2011

 

Dr. Tina Veale, chair, convened the meeting at 4:00 p.m., in Booth Library Conference Room 4440.

 

Present:Julie Benedict, Lola Burnham, Abdou Illia, Paul Johnston, Amitabh Joshi, Dean Allen Lanham, Stephen Lucas, Roberto Luna, Kiran Padmaraju, Amy Rosenstein, Jenny Sipes, Jeffrey Snell, Tina Veale, Peter Wiles, and Mandy Wu

 

Excused:Madeline Landes and Betsy Pudliner

 

I. Welcome and Comments

A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes from the February 16, 2011, meeting; the motion carried.

 

II. Communications

Communications were received from Madeline Landes and Betsy Pudliner regarding their inability to attend today�s meeting.

 

III. Old Business

The Board spent considerable effort reviewing their evaluations of the submissions and voting for the 2011 Booth Library Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity. There were twelve submissions (one student submitted two works), and it was noted that the caliber of research submitted this year was improved over last year.There was discussion with regard to making the students� written work available to all judges online or having them available for checkout in the Periodicals/Reserves area of the Library.These ideas will be taken into consideration by the Library.

 

The following students received awards and/or Honorable Mention.The awardees will receive $300 and all students will receive a certificate.

 

  • Natalie Gray and Melissa Council, The Effectiveness of Bite Charts in Behavioral Feeding Intervention (graduate level, written work) � award (shared)
  • Sally van der Graaff, Gatsby and JAZZ: One Coin, Two Sides (graduate level, written work) � award
  • Jacob Smith, English Pedagogy at Eastern Illinois State Normal School: The Unique Evolution and Effect of an Adapted Composition Course (undergraduate level, written work) � award
  • Leah Stevenson, Misogyny and The Money (Undergraduate level, artistic work) � award
  • Holly Thomas, The �Truthiness� of the �Daily Show Effect�� A Presidency Study (graduate level, written work) � honorable mention
  • Samantha Strykowski, The Foundations to Photographic Success (undergraduate level, artistic work) � honorable mention
  • Philip Mohr (submitted on behalf of: Philip Grumm, Elizabeth Horoszko, Maggie McAdams, Christine McDonough, Patrick McGuire, Andy Near, Charlotte Rayburn, and Michael Smith), Symposium �Reconstructing Lincoln Log Cabin: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Coles County� (graduate level, symposium) � honorable mention

 

 

There will be a short ceremony and reception after the next Library Advisory Board meeting, April 20, 2011, to honor these students.

 

 

IV. New Business

A draft copy of Booth Library�s calendar for FY2012 was reviewed by the Board.A motion was made and seconded to endorse the calendar and the motion carried.

 

Nominations of Chair and Vice-Chair for the next term are to be submitted to Chair Tina Veale before the next meeting.A motion was made and seconded to move the next meeting from������ April 13, 2011 to April 20, 2011.The motion carried.

 

Dean�s Report��

Dean Lanham introduced guest presenter, Marlene Slough, Head of Acquisition Services. Marlene explained to the Board the 2011 Periodical and Standing Order Review schedule.This review is done every spring and she shared the deadlines for this process.Booth Library makes a concerted effort to meet curriculum needs of faculty across campus.The Library�s primary goal is making the best use of resources; there has been an increased emphasis on electronic format as students prefer it.Approximately 200 additional journal titles will be moved to electronic only format.Marlene Slough distributed two short lists, one of Periodical Titles Recommended for Cancellation and one for Standing Order Titles Recommended for Cancellation.

 

Planning Issues

Dr. Lanham briefly outlined the activities planned at Booth Library next week, April 10 � 16, 2011, in celebration of National Library Week.This year�s theme is �Create Your Own Story.�There will be various exhibits on display throughout the Library.

  • Saturday, April 9, 2011, the Ballenger Teachers Center will host a special library-themed story time for children at 10:00 a.m.
  • Booth Library will host its first annual Edible Book Festival on Monday, April 11, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. � 7:00 p.m. in the Marvin Foyer.
  • The Library Workers� Day reception will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, 3:30 p.m. � 5:00 p.m.
  • The Annual Book Sale is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 2011, on the library quad, beginning at 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., and prices will remain the same as last year.
  • Wednesday, April 13, 2011, is �Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Illinois Libraries.�Each of the Library�s service desks will have disposable cameras for taking photos each hour of patrons and staff going about their library business.
