I. Welcome
and Comments
The
minutes from the October 20, 2004, meeting were
approved
as submitted.
II.
Communications
Communication
was received from David Carpenter regarding the Faculty Senate’s
resolution
requesting that, “the Library Advisory Board, working with other
constituencies
on campus, begins the process of choosing a book and organizing
programming to
institute the One Book/One Campus program in fall 2005.”
There has been considerable discussion to
choose Mary Shelley’s book, Frankenstein.
In October 2005, Booth Library will host a
national traveling exhibit, “Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of
Nature.” The exhibit would provide
opportunities
for a variety of related activities.
The
Spring Semester, 2005, One Book, One University book chosen by the
Library
Advisory Board is Nickel and Dimed:
On (Not) Getting By in America, by
Barbara Ehrenreich. Discussion
sessions are scheduled to begin in
mid-January or early February.
III.
Old Business
- Patron Satisfaction
Survey. The 2004 Patron Satisfaction
Survey, an annual assessment tool for Library Services, was reviewed. This year’s survey, like last year’s, was
distributed to students during classes on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. Graduate students were surveyed during their
evening
classes that same day. The comments that
were made on the survey are beneficial for the library to review in
terms of
services provided to patrons. One-third
of the comments related to hours of operation. The
first part of the survey dealt with library usage and
the second half
dealt with general satisfaction. Overall,
the survey was very positive for the library.
- New electronic resources demo.
Karen
Whisler demonstrated two major databases the library is considering to
add: JSTOR and American Periodicals Series
Online.
IV.
New Business
There was no new business.
Dean’s
Report
Personnel Issues
-
The library recently hired
Janice Derr as an evening
librarian, and Josh Koontz as a microcomputer support specialist. The library is in the process of hiring one
additional position for the administration office.
-
The FY2005 Booth Library
Committee Roster was
distributed. One additional committee,
the Public Services Committee, has been added to the roster. Dean Lanham extended an open invitation to
all Library Advisory Board members to attend any of the library’s
committee
meetings.
Budget
Issues
- The Provost met with the
deans and has reconciled
the personnel services budgets.
Service
Issues
- NoteBooth, which is
published two to three times a year, is a library publication designed
to help keep faculty apprised of activities at Booth Library. Faculty can expect the next edition to be
published this week. Publicity for the
upcoming discussions on Nickel and Dimed:
On (Not) Getting By in America, will be
highlighted in this edition.
- A list of Departmental Library
Coordinators was distributed. The
coordinators, who work closely with the librarians, are responsible for
dissemination of information to and from their department.
- The
2004 Periodical and Standing Order Review
report was shared. This report
represents the number of periodicals added to the collection, as well
as the
number of titles deleted. The Dean
advised that the list of periodicals added is growing.
The library is spending more money to expand
the number of titles each year. Most of
the
additions are for electronic journals within databases for which the
library
has existing subscriptions. The savings
from
the deleted titles helps to maintain existing print journals.
Planning
Issues
- Dean Lanham shared the brochure on,
“Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature,” provided by the
sponsors of the exhibit. Frankenstein will
be on campus during October and November of 2005. The
format for the exhibit will be similar to the “Elizabeth I: Ruler and
Legend,” exhibit hosted by Booth Library in April 2004.
It is expected that Mary
Shelley’s book will be chosen for the One Book, One University project
to complement the exhibit. Activities
planned during the exhibit will include films, speakers, programs
geared to school-aged children and concurrent coordinated exhibits
provided by Booth Library and area public and school libraries. In addition, a Halloween fest with costumes is
being planned. Because Frankenstein will
have relevance in most curriculums, it is hoped that all departments
will submit program ideas for this exhibit.
V. Adjournment
Scott Meiners reminded the Board that the next
meeting of
the Library Advisory Board is schedule for December 8, 2004, at 4:00
p.m., in
the library conference room 4440.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
