MINUTES OF THE LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD

September 21, 2005

 

The meeting was convened by Dr. Ann Fritz, Chair, at 4:10 p.m. in the Dean�s Conference Room.

 

Present:Monty Bennett, Charles Chancellor, Ann Fritz, Sam Guccione, Olaf Hoerschelmann, Dean Allen Lanham, Marina Marjanovic, Chris Mitchell, and Mukti Upadhyay

 

Not Present: Jose Deustua, Harrison Green, Eric Hake, Olivet Jagusah, Frances Murphy, and Dawn VanGunten

 

I.Welcome and Comments

The minutes from the April 20, 2005, meeting were approved as submitted.

 

II. Communications

Communications were received from Jose Deutsua, Harrison Green, Eric Hake, and Frances Murphy regarding their inability to attend today�s meeting.

Dean�s Report

 

Welcome

Dr. Lanham welcomed the new board members and distributed packets containing information about Booth Library.He advised that during this term, the board would review some of Booth Library�s policies and procedures and related Internal Governing Policies and make recommendations.Dr. Lanham encouraged board members to identify interested students to serve on the Board.In addition, he advised board members that they can participate on library standing committees.A roster of the committees will be shared at the next meeting.

 

Personnel Issues

In compliance with a state mandate, reclassification of civil service library staff positions (LOA, LTA and Library Clerk) will become effective October 1, 2005.

 

Bev Cruse, the library�s photographer and graphic artist, was recently awarded the Illinois Library Association�s Jane O�Brien Award which recognizes a library support staff person who has made an outstanding contribution to the library community in Illinois.

 

Service Issues

Grant reports: Library Services has had another successful year of grant applications.David Bell was awarded a Redden Fund Grant for $1305 to purchase Gregg Toland's cinematography in DVD format. Ann Brownson was awarded a Redden Fund Grant for $1500 to purchase works of classic children's literature.Jocelyn Tipton was awarded $500 for her LTSA Government Documents Technology Grant Program award entitled, �Reaching out to Increase Public Access to Government Information.����

 

Booth Library was successful with two large grant proposals submitted to the Illinois State Library for LSTA grants: Bob Hillman and Carl Lorber received a grant for $10,240 in the Digital Imaging category for their �Warbler Digitization Project;� and Dr. Lanham and Marlene Slough received a grant for $125,000 in the category of Creative Use of Libraries for their �Art and Architecture in Illinois Libraries.� The library typically submits 10-20 grant proposals per year.

 

Scholars� Corner board � Booth Library has dedicated one of its bulletin boards, located on the 3000 level by the central elevator, for academic pursuits with one half of the board for the posting of student scholarly notices (for example, calls for papers, conference presentations), and the other half to be used to post papers for students seeking information on academic research opportunities.Submissions for the �Scholars� Corner� can be sent to Sandy King in the administration office.

 

Art rails � Art rails have been installed on the Periodical hallway for the display of student works of art. During the Frankenstein exhibit two separate displays of art will be exhibited in the Periodical Gallery: �Monster Art,� developed by local elementary school students, and another exhibit by Eastern students, �Open Student Art Show� from Chris Kahler, associate professor of art.

 

Planning Issues

One Book, One University for 2006 � Last year the book, Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich was chosen as the summer experimental reading activity for this program and later for winter reading for the campus community.Booth Library hosted several activities to bring students, faculty, and patrons together for the discussion of the book.This semester the book is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.This book will coincide with the traveling exhibition, Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature hosted by Booth Library from October 17 � November 22, 2005.This exhibition is funded through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, based on a large exposition produced by the National Library of Medicine, who then developed and helped fund the national traveling exhibition in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office.

 

A list of suggested books from last year�s board to be considered for the One Book, One University project was distributed.Dr. Lanham asked the board to review the list and be prepared to make recommendations for fall 2006.

 

Dr. Bill Weber, Associate Vice President, visited the board last spring to discuss using a book as a foundation for summer school courses.The Board will be asked to choose a title in early spring to have ready for summer 2007.

 

Frankenstein Exhibit: fall 2005 plan update � Among the activities planned are lectures, student presentations, panel discussions, films, music, and a Halloween party for student.There will be prizes for contests, giveaways of tattoos, bookmarks, and pins, and a specially-designed Frankenstein t-shirt for sale.In addition, the book will be offered as a podcast and made available on Booth Library�s website.

 

Other

Dean Lanham announced that Booth Library participated in a regional library book event held in Urbana on August 27.Two vans filled with books were taken to the event and over $700 in gift books were sold.Other organizations involved in the event included the University of Illinois Press and Libraries, Lincoln Trail Libraries System, Borders Bookstore and various local authors, to name a few.

 

Booth Library will host a visitor from the University of Botswana from October 18-21, 2005.It is anticipated that international visitors will become more frequent at Booth Library. Some of these guest librarians are hosted through the University of Illinois� Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, In additional Dean Lanham has made many international contacts during his tenure as President of the Illinois Library Association.
