/i>: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden=
Side
of Everything, by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, the book chos=
en
for this year’s One Book, One University project, are available in the
library’s collection. T=
here
has been some promotion of the project and more is in progress. The book will be touted as the
“alternate Spring Break” in the hopes that students will read t=
he
book during their time away. =
Faculty
will serve as discussion leaders for the open sessions planned for March 25=
and
March 26, 2008. When asked wh=
y this
book was chosen, Dr. Lanham informed the Board that this book has made the =
list
for the top books to be considered for the past three to four years, which =
moved
it ahead of others in consideration. The list developed by the Board was
taken to library faculty and they endorsed the choice of Freakonomics, as well.=
·
FY2008 Book and Materials Budget – Dr.
Lanham explained in detail various aspects of this document that is publish=
ed

rian
bibliographer is assigned to each academic discipline. He explained how the monies are
distributed. Not listed was $=
15,000
of monies for Nursing recently received. The Contingency Fund represents 5% =
of the
Book and Materials Budget, and is held available for use to support of jour=
nal overages
or unforeseen emergencies or opportunities to develop collections.
IV. New Business
Dean’s Report
Welcome
Dean Lanham introduced the guest speaker, Jocelyn Tipt=
on,
the Library’s government documents librarian. Jocelyn also works in Reference and
Collection Management and is the bibliographer for Psychology and Political
Science.
Booth Library participates in the Federal Depository L=
ibrary
Program which provides free public access to government information. Most participants are academ=
ic
libraries or large public libraries.
The government produces massive amounts of information; and, every J=
uly,
Jocelyn reviews the publication categories and chooses those she believes w=
ill
be of interest to our campus and community—approximately 50% of what =
the
government produces. In addit=
ion to
federal documents, the library also serves as a depository for Illinois sta=
te
government documents, all of which are located on the second floor of Booth=
Library,
unless they are part of the online resources. In addition, the library has an
extensive document collection of maps, microfiche, CD’s and
DVD’s. More and more
documents are available electronically; however, the library elects to main=
tain
its paper collection in order to have better control of the materials provi=
ded to
our patrons. There is no cost=
to
the library to be a part of this program.&=
nbsp;
The documents, however, are owned by the federal government and can =
be
taken back at any time. In
addition, we are mandated to keep all materials for five years. Booth Library generally maintains =
the
materials in the collection until they become outdated.
Service Issues
Dr. Lanham distributed a handout regarding services Bo=
oth
Library provides to off-campus patrons.&nb=
sp;
Dean Hine is in the process of preparing a document for the Provost =
that
will be distributed to continuing education students (approximately 1,500 t=
o 2,500)
who work or study away from the home institution. The Library’s contribution t=
o this
document lists the services available to the non-traditional students. Due to time constraints, this will=
be
discussed in more detail at the next meeting.
Planning Issues
Dean Lanham reminded the Board that Breaking News: How the Associated Press Has =
Covered
War, Peace, and Everything Else, a traveling exhibit hosted by Booth Library and the Department of Jou=
rnalism,
was ongoing at Booth Library. In addition to the traveling exhib=
it,
several additional exhibits are on display prepared by our librarians. These local-themed exhibits use
primarily student publications.
Last night, February 12, 2008, approximately 125 people attended the
opening events.
Booth Library is now beginning to focus on two new exh=
ibits
to arrive soon. The first, to arrive in February 2009, is “Wrapped in Pride: Ghanaian Kente and African American Identity” and the
other is Teacher Education Tames the
Prairie (working title) in September/October of 2009. The project committee has chosen t=
o feature
vignettes on Illinois
schools and the evolution of the Normal school. In an effort to create a more
interesting exhibit, Dean Lanham and other staff members are looking for
artifacts to demonstrate the changes that have occurred in the education
field.
V. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by:
Christine Derrickson, Recording Secretary
