Renovation News
Move News, August 12 , 1999
We have completed the relocation of Booth Library collections and services to our temporary locations so that our building can be prepared for its $18 million renovation and expansion to take place August 1999 through December 2001. The Booth Library building is now closed to the public and the asbestos abatement team is there starting their work.
For public services and collections, the McAfee Gymnasium building is serving as our main branch. The entrance to McAfee is on the northeast corner of the building; the disabled entrance is on the southwest corner. Handouts describing our new locations and where collections reside may be printed from our website or picked up from any service desk.
McAfee houses service desks and offices for Reference, Circulation, and Periodicals/Reserves and offices for library administration, Media Services, and Collection Management. Collections housed here include monograph classes A-G, N, and Z; reference materials; periodicals since 1990; curriculum and juvenile materials; reserves; microforms; oversized items from all collections; bestsellers and popular fiction; and the new book alcove. Interlibrary loan materials may be picked up at the McAfee circulation desk. Public seating and quiet study areas are also provided.
The Union Branch, located below campus bowling and billiards in the Student Union, houses monograph collections in classes H-M. There is a service desk there with staff members to help you locate materials.
The Gregg Branch, located in the Gregg Triad residence complex, houses the computer lab and all media collections (CDs, videos, sound recordings, computer software, etc.) including media reserves, and media equipment (players, recorders, typewriters, etc.) The Library Technology Services' desk is located here. Fifty of the computers are open 24-hours per day, Sunday noon through Friday 6:00 pm, and on Saturday 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Booth West, located in the West Park Plaza at 612 W. Lincoln Avenue, houses a service desk, monograph classes P-V, periodicals published before 1990, maps, government documents, microform collections, the University Archives and Special Collections, and the Illinois Regional Archives Depository. Public seating and study areas are provided. Upon request, materials from Booth West will be delivered to the Circulation desk in McAfee. The Panther Express bus passes the Booth West location during the regular term.
The Acquisitions and Cataloging Departments and the library receiving office are located off campus and may be contacted using phone, fax, or email.
Communicating with the library faculty and staff is much the same as it was in the past; all phone, fax, and email addresses are the same as they were in Booth. Any lines which have been added are posted elsewhere on our website. Call the reference desk (581-6072) or the administrative office (581-6061) for further information.
We thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this 14-week transition. Visit us soon and let us know if you cannot find something or need some help with your research.
Best wishes for a great fall semester.

Booth Library Update!
**********************************************************************
Due to the renovation and expansion of Booth, the BOG Room will no longer be a campus meeting space after May 21. According to Dean Allen Lanham, "We look forward to opening a new campus meeting and conference space when the renovation is complete."
Ted Weidner, director of Facilities Planning and Management, has announced that the staff parking lot immediately south of Booth could be closed as early as Monday, May 10. It will remain closed while the move takes place, then temporarily reopen until actual renovation work begins.
For a complete schedule
of the move and daily updates, consult the "Booth Library Renovation Project"

Booth Library to
Undergo Major Transformation
*****************************************************************
During the renovation, the library will operate out of McAfee Gymnasium and several other sites on and near campus. When the renovation is completed in 2001, library services will be restored to a somewhat larger but greatly enhanced facility equipped to meet the information needs of the campus community for at least the next 20 years.
Some of the unique features of the renovated facility will be:
--The modernization and expansion of the library's computer labs, media services and other "high-tech" facilities, resulting in greater efficiency and improved reliability.
--The inclusion of a two-story, glass-enclosed atrium separating the old and new sections of the building and providing visual reference points on every level of the building.
--The construction
of a 30-foot addition at the south end of the building that provides for
a new south entrance at ground level designed to reflect the grandeur of
the north entrance and providing persons with disabilities access to the
building. New
walkways leading
up to the south entrance and landscaping will take the place of the current
parking lot at the south end of the building. The south facade will feature
rows of windows exposing faculty offices, staff areas and public rooms
that will be located in the new addition. The current entrance on the west
will become a service entrance with no public access. The old, north entrance
will have doors opening on the main level only
with the current
lower level entrance becoming an emergency exit.
--Improvements that will bring the library into full compliance with accessibility guidelines mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act will include an elevator at the new south entrance that will transport library users to the main level of the building where many library services will be located; accessible restroom facilities and drinking fountains; audible and visual alarm systems; clearly marked emergency routes; appropriate signage; accessible study tables, carrels, computer workstations, and special purpose areas, etc.; special electronic and audio-visual equipment; wheelchair accessible book stacks; and TDD telephones.
--The installation
of new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical
systems; new or improved elevators; new security systems at the north
and south
entrances; new floor
and wall treatments; and new compact shelving that will eliminate many
of the aisles between book shelves by placing the shelves on tracks that
allow the shelves to be rolled together or apart as needed to retrieve
books from a particular spot. Storage areas throughout the building also
will be consolidated.
--The transformation of the stack areas that calls for the removal of walls that now separate the book stacks from the exterior walls, creating a more open, well-lighted space.
--Enhancements to
the main level that will make it more patron-friendly. Reference services,
the online public access terminals, the copy center, the circulation/reserve
desk and the interlibrary loan office will be located on the main level.
A central corridor, intersecting and overlooking the new atrium area, will
connect these service areas in a more logical fashion than they are now.
The "read and relax" room on the main level
will be replaced
with a new curriculum laboratory. Adjacent to this room will be the curriculum
and juvenile collections, located in what is now called the east reading
room. Leading down to the ground floor from here will be a new stairway.
Seating areas throughout the main level will be out of the way of major
traffic areas and will be more diverse in character, ranging from individual
study carrels to comfortable lounge
areas overlooking
the atrium. Stacks on the main level will be interspersed with seating
areas, creating comfortable places for concentrated study.
--The creation of
more logically organized and attractive space on the mezzanine level (below
the main level). The north building on this level will house the government
documents and the map collections, with a connecting corridor overlooking
the atrium
and leading to a
fixed book stack area and a patron seating area in the south building.
--The reconfiguration
of the ground floor to accommodate the atrium area, with a stairway and
elevator leading up to the main level. The library lecture hall will be
replaced by the microform collection which will be near a new lounge and
vending area. The periodicals desk and collections will be moved from the
top floor to the ground floor. Faculty members will have a special
area set aside for them where they can read current periodicals stored
on the closed shelves. Also housed on the ground floor
(north building)
will be the cataloging department, a fixed stack area and a redesigned
media services department featuring a new demonstration/presentation room
and a technology resource room for faculty members to use in developing
media-related course materials. The ground floor of the south building
will store bound periodicals and a large portion of the stacks collection
and house the acquisitions department, university archives, special collections
and the Illinois Regional Archives Depository. A new conservation facility
will enable staff to more effectively preserve archival collections or
convert them to different formats. Patrons of the university archives or
IRAD will have a more attractive and well-equipped setting in which to
pursue research projects. For the first time, university archives will
be able to provide proper storage conditions for its
collections, thus
ensuring their continued availability to current and future generations
of researchers.
--The replacement
of the periodicals department on the top floor with library technology
services, the self-study materials center containing two 30-workstation
computer laboratories, an electronic classroom with 24 workstations and
the audio-visual
listening/viewing
area. More up-to-date equipment will be available to students and
other library users and the electronic classroom should be better supervised
and monitored in its new location. The audiovisual materials will be on
open shelves
making them more
accessible to library users. The top floor also will house a campus conference
room, a variety of group study and listening rooms, the library administrative
offices and an attractive lounge overlooking the newly landscaped area
between
the library and
Lumpkin Hall.

Tentative Layout of Temporary
Library Presented
*****************************************************************
EIU Library Dean Allen Lanham Tuesday told the Faculty Senate that McAfee Building will be transformed into a usable, temporary library during the renovation of Booth Library which is expected to take up to two and one-half years to complete.
The library move is expected to begin May 10 and will take about four to six weeks to complete, Lanham said, noting that all library services will continue to be provided despite the move. Help desks will remain open at Booth until they can be established at the relocation sites and all library materials will be retained on campus or at nearby satellite facilities.
"McAfee will serve as the front door or main building for the temporary library. It and the University Union Gallery and the former Gregg Triad dining center will house most of the familiar service desks of Booth Library. These buildings are all within close proximity of each other and to Booth Library, so patrons who are used to frequenting Booth won't have to travel too far out of their way to access library services and materials," Lanham said.
A soon-to-be constructed shell building near the Facilities Planning and Management complex west of campus and the former Charleston IGA building on Lincoln Avenue will serve as satellite sites for certain library functions, most of which are "behind-the-scenes" activities, Lanham said.
The "tentative" layout for the temporary library (includes public desks, public seating/group study areas, public computers and stack areas) in McAfee and other locations is as follows:
McAfee South Gym: Reference and Circulation/Interlibrary Loan Desks, Reference Room, Reference Areas and Reference Collection.
McAfee North Gym: Periodicals and Reserve Desks, Periodicals Room, Periodicals Collection (post-1990) and New Book Alcove.
McAfee Lower Level: Media Services Desk and General North and South Stack Levels (also to be housed in Union Gallery and IGA building).
McAfee Classrooms/Upper Level (specific rooms have not been assigned): East Reading Room, Study Lounge, Technology Training Facility, Curriculum/Juvenile Collection, Read and Relax Materials and library administrative offices.
The Department of Leisure Studies will remain housed in McAfee, while some physical education classes and large program spaces in McAfee will be temporarily relocated to accommodate the library's need for space.
Microform cabinets and readers
will be located in McAfee and IGA. The IGA facility also will house Interlibrary
Loan, University Archives/IRAD and Periodicals Collections (pre-1990).
Copiers and campus phones will be located in McAfee, the Union Gallery,
IGA, Gregg Triad and the new
shell building.
The Gregg Triad (upper level) will house the Self-Study Materials Center/Library Technology Desk, SMC computers and Media Collections. The lower level will house media equipment for instructional use.
Acquisitions/Receiving, Cataloging and Collection Development will occupy the new shell building which won't be open to the public.
"What you see in the proposed
layout for the temporary library is an attempt to concentrate public seating/group
study areas and the majority of the library's collections in McAfee which
is a central campus location. It is very important that we have enough
collections in McAfee to attract students so they feel they have
a library. I think we
have accomplished that in our proposal and, at the same time, accommodated
the needs of others to the best extent possible," Lanham said.
Lanham said movers from EIU's American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 981 will transport all library offices and furniture to their temporary locations, while an off-campus moving company will relocate the library's collections and shelving. He estimates library materials to be moved at a rate of about 59,000 volumes per week.
"We are fortunate to be moving
during the slowest time of the academic calendar. We have worked
out a scheme where departments can be moved and re-established in their
new temporary locations within a day, causing little or no interruption
in service,"
Lanham said.
He added that although the
library's move coincides with the start-up of Intersession, he doesn't
anticipate that to be a problem. He also said the Booth Library Planning
Committee has yet to determine the order in which departments will move
but
anticipates the Reference
Desk to be the first to go. Booth does have to be completely emptied by
July 1 for asbestos abatement, he said.
"I think we are prepared (for the move)," Lanham said, noting that he and several library staff members recently visited East Tennessee State University over the semester break to observe their library move and were able to learn from their process.
The $17 million Booth Library renovation will correct many of the building's outstanding problems and make it one of the most technically up-to-date library buildings in the state," Lanham said. "Booth Library is heavily used and has long needed significant rehabilitation work."
"Preservation of the building's collegiate gothic appearance is a critical feature of the renovation and expansion project," Lanham noted.
The proposed renovations to
Booth include the addition of an atrium, the closure of the west entrance
and the addition of a library entrance on the south side of the building.

McAfee Gymnasium will be transformed into a “workable library” during the proposed renovations to Booth Library, scheduled to begin in May.
Allen Lanham, dean of library services, said the goal of the library services staff is to turn McAfee into a functional library housing many of the current library’s materials.
“We are trying to transform McAfee into a workable library,” Lanham said at Tuesday’s Faculty Senate meeting.
As a result of the renovations to Booth Library, library materials will be moved to four on-campus locations and one off-campus location. The on-campus locations include McAfee, the gallery of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union, the former Gregg Triad dining facility and a future shell building near the facilities planning and management building. The off-campus location is the former IGA building, 612 W. Lincoln Ave.
During the renovations, the shell building will house receiving, cataloging and collection development, Lanham said. The facility will not be open to the public.
The IGA and gallery relocation sites will be open to the public but a member of the library staff will have to retrieve materials for patrons, he said.
Lanham said Gregg Triad will house the library technology desk, SMC lab computers and media collections on the upper level. The lower level will house media equipment delivered to classrooms for instructional use.
McAfee will house the reference materials, north and south stack levels, microfilms, juvenile collection, circulation desk, reserve desk, media services desk and library administration, Lanham said.
Lanham said he expects to keep all library services open during the relocation of library materials.
“We must continue the services and that is our goal,” he said. “We plan to continue all library services we are currently offering into the foreseeable future.”
Lanham said terms are currently being negotiated with an off-campus moving company that would be responsible for moving all the library’s collections.
He estimates library materials will be moved at a rate of approximately 59,000 volumes per week.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 981 has agreed to a contract with Booth Library that ensures union members will be responsible for moving office furniture and office items out of Booth Library.
Lanham said the library materials must be moved very carefully in order to keep things in order.
“In order to maintain collections in their current positions you have to take great care,” he said.
He said over the semester break members of the library staff traveled to East Tennessee State University to observe their library move and were able to learn from their process.
The proposed renovations to Booth Library include the addition of an atrium, the closure of the west entrance and the addition of a library entrance on the south side of the building, Lanham said.
Lanham said the new atrium will be an area were library patrons can see all the levels of the library.
“We want patrons to be able to see every level and know how to get there,” he said.
He said one of the goals of the renovation is to bring some of the features of the north building to the south building of the library.
“We’re trying to bring some of the characteristics of the old building all the way through the new building,” he said.
Another planned change will be the expansion of the south building into the parking lot on Garfield Ave. and the addition of green space where the parking lot is, Lanham said.
Lanham said the library renovations will also include group study and group listening rooms.
He said one of the problems with the current library is there is no area for groups to study without distracting others.
“We find that one of the hindrances of our current facilities is that we don’t have group study areas,” Lanham said. “We’ve watched what other universities have done with their libraries and group studies are very popular.”
