  • Making of America (University of Michigan) 
    Free access to approximately 10,000 books and 50,000 journal articles published in the USA during the 19th century. Emphasis on the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. 
  • National Academies Press
    Provides free online access to over 2,500 scholarly books on a range of topics in science, engineering, and health. Search by title, author or subject, or browse by category.
  • Project Gutenberg 
    Access to electronic texts of hundreds of literary works in the public domain. Also provides access to reference works such as dictionaries, almanacs, etc. Please note: this site provides the entire book as a single text file!
  • The Universal Digital Library
    The first major project of Universal Digital Library is the Million Book Digital Library project. More than 1.7 million books have been scanned as of December, 2007. Many of the titles in this resource are restricted to 15% access due to copyright restrictions.
  • Wright American Fiction 1851-1875 
    Collection of 19th century American fiction, as listed in Lyle Wright's bibliography, American Fiction, 1851-1875. There are currently 2887 texts included (2239 unedited, 648 fully edited and encoded) by 1383 authors.
