Library Workshops - Summer 2008
Library Services traditionally offers technology workshops each semester. All workshops are free of charge. Workshops will be offered in our e-classroom, room 4450, on the 4000 level of Booth Library. Each session is limited to 24 participants and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.Booth Library now has online registration and detailed information on all of the workshops listed below.

MS Access 2007: Queries
Microsoft Access 2007, a part of the Microsoft Office Suite, is a relational database program that allows users to manage large amounts of information. Explore the new interface for Access 2007. Learn the basics of creating tables: entering and editing data, sorting fields, filtering, and other functions. Learn about creating a new database and importing data from other programs.

Description:
This second workshop on Access 2007 continues with creating Access queries from wizards and from design view. Discuss the query types, and create one of each type. Learn how to edit basic queries to manipulate and filter data. Learn to use Design View for creating or manipulating your queries.

Description:
The third Access workshop starts out with learning about the different types of reports and the easiest way to get the finished report you want. The workshop will continue with in depth hands on work in the design view for reports. Finish the session with translating your new knowledge of building reports into creating Access forms.

Description:
Microsoft Excel 2007 is a spreadsheet program that is a powerful tool that can be used for accounting or databases. In this session you learn to navigate the program and create a spreadsheet.

MS PowerPoint 2007: The Basics
Date/Time: Tuesday, June 17, 2008, 2-4 pm
Description:
Part of the New Microsoft Office 2007 suite, PowerPoint is used to create computer-based electronic presentations that include text, graphics, pictures, sound, and video. This workshop will introduce participants to PowerPoint 2007 and how it can be used to deliver class lectures and conference presentations. Topics covered in this session include the basic navigation of PowerPoint, design templates, the new ribbon toolbars, and general tips on the “do’s and don’ts” when creating presentations. Learn how to insert, format, and move text, layouts, and graphics. Attendees are encouraged to bring a flash drive if desired.

In-depth discussion will include tips on saving presentations in different formats for optimal results when delivering the project on different computers or situations such as a kiosk or for the Web. The advanced session for PowerPoint 2007 will cover grouping graphics, creating master slides, adding interactive components for audience interaction, printing options, considerations when using different versions, and packing a presentation for use on another computer. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and will be given time in class to create their own presentation using the skills learned from all three workshops. Bring a flash drive to save the presentation you create during this session.

MS Windows Vista DemoDates/Times: Monday, June 16, 2008, 9-11 am
Description:
This workshop will introduce participants to the new features and user interface of Windows Vista, the newest Microsoft operating system. Improvements, changes, tips and tricks will be demonstrated using a typical work environment configuration. For attendees who are interested in using Windows Vista on a personal computer, the different versions of Vista and compatibility with the campus network will be discussed.
Target Audience:
This workshop will be of particular interest to individuals at EIU who will be utilizing Windows Vista on new computers within the next year either at home or on campus.
Expertise Level:
Experience using a Windows or Macintosh based computer.

Creating Web Pages with Netscape Composer - IntroductionDates/Times: Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 2-4 pm
Description:
This workshop starts with professional tips on Web Design. Learners will then create a web page with Netscape Composer. Learn to add and format text, bullets, lists, lines, and tables. Practice inserting pictures, links, targets and mailto buttons. Give your page an interesting background. Bring a flash drive to save your files and bring your server name and log in information.
