Library Workshops - Fall 2008

Library Services traditionally offers technology workshops each semester. All workshops are free of charge. Workshops will be offered in our e-classroom, room 4450, on the 4000 level of Booth Library. Each session is limited to 24 participants and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

MS Access 2003: Tables

Description: 
Learn everything about the basics of tables: entering and editing data, sorting fields, filtering, and other basic functions. Learn about creating a new database and importing data from other programs.

MS Access 2003: Queries

Description: 
This second workshop on Access continues with creating Access queries. Learn and practice everything about all the query types, and then go on to using Design View for queries.

MS Access 2003: Reports and Forms

Date/Time: Thursday, October 23, 2008, 2-4 pm

Description: 
The third Access workshop starts out with learning about the different types of reports and the easiest way to get the finished report you want. The workshop will continue with in depth hands on work in the design view for reports. The workshop finishes with translating our new knowledge of building reports into creating the Access forms.

MS Excel 2003: Spreadsheets

A workshop covering the basic spreadsheet features of Excel 2003. Participants will build a simple spreadsheet.

A workshop in Excel 2003 discussing formulas for special worksheet layouts, and advanced formulas.  Participants will both create spreadsheets and work with pre-made spreadsheets.

MS PowerPoint 2003: Intro

Date/Time:  Monday, September 29, 2008, 2-4 pm

Description: 
Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 is an increasingly popular software program used to create
computer-based presentations. PowerPoint enables you to create electronic presentations that include text, graphics, pictures, sound, and video. This workshop will introduce participants to PowerPoint and how it can be used to deliver class lectures and conference presentations. Topics covered include the AutoContent Wizard, design templates, the PowerPoint interface. Learn how to insert, format, and move text, layouts, and graphics. Bring a flash drive to save your work.

MS PowerPoint 2003: Intermediate

Description:
This PowerPoint 2003 workshop will show participants how to create your own unique design template and save it.  Work with adding animation, transitions, draw tools, sound, and video to your presentation.  Learn how to save and publish your presentation to the web.

Description:
The advanced session of PowerPoint 2003 will cover grouping graphics, creating master slides, adding interactive components, printing options, considerations when using different versions, and packing a presentation.  Bring a flash drive to save the presentation you create during this session.

MS Word 2003: Basics

Description: 
Word Basics 2003 explores finding and opening multiple documents, how to use templates, applying formats and styles, using the spell check and grammar check features, editing your document with cut and paste, and creating headers and footers.

MS Access 2007: Tables

Date/Time: Friday, October 31, 2008, 9-11 am

Description: 
Microsoft Access 2007, a part of the Microsoft Office Suite, is a relational database program that allows users to manage large amounts of information. Explore the new interface for Access 2007. Learn the basics of creating tables: entering and editing data, sorting fields, filtering, and other functions. Learn about creating a new database and importing data from other programs.

Anyone wanting to use Access 2007.

Basic understanding of Windows and Office programs.

MS Access 2007: Queries

Description: 
This second workshop on Access 2007 continues with creating Access queries from wizards and from design view. Discuss the query types, and create one of each type. Learn how to edit basic queries to manipulate and filter data. Learn to use Design View for creating or manipulating your queries.

MS Access 2007: Reports and Forms

Description: 
The third Access 2007 workshop starts out with learning about the different types of reports and the easiest way to get the finished report you want. The workshop will continue with in depth test of the new report tool compared to the old design view for reports. Finish the session with translating your new knowledge of building reports into creating Access forms.

A hands-on workshop in Excel 2007 that shows you how to chart spreadsheet data. Participants will create several types of charts from pre-made spreadsheets.

MS PowerPoint 2007: The Basics

Date/Time:  Tuesday, October 28, 2008, 9-11 am

Description: 
Part of the New Microsoft Office 2007 suite, PowerPoint is used to create computer-based electronic presentations that include text, graphics, pictures, sound, and video. This workshop will introduce participants to PowerPoint 2007 and how it can be used to deliver class lectures and conference presentations. Topics covered in this session include the basic navigation of PowerPoint, design templates, the new ribbon toolbars, and general tips on the “do’s and don’ts” when creating presentations. Learn how to insert, format, and move text, layouts, and graphics. Attendees are encouraged to bring a flash drive if desired.

This PowerPoint 2007 workshop will show participants how to create unique design templates and save for later use. Attendees will work with adding animation, transitions, draw tools, sound, and video to presentations. In-depth discussion will include tips on saving presentations in different formats for optimal results when delivering the project on different computers or situations such as a kiosk or for the Web. MS Word 2007: Interface

Description: 
Interface explores the program concentrating on the new 2007 Word ribbon interface and office menu button. Learn what's new and what's still in 2007. Find out about document compatability and whether or not to convert your documents.

MS Word 2007: Basics

Description:

MS Outlook 2007: Intro

Date/Time: Monday, November 3, 2008, 2-4 pm

Description: 
This introductory course will help attendees become comfortable and familiar with Outlook 2007. The new User Interface will be examined in depth as well as the basic functionality of Email, Calendar and Contacts. These features will be explained so that course participants will be able to take this knowledge back to their own computer and begin actively using the various components of Outlook 2007.

Target Audience: 
This class is for new users to Outlook 2007.

Expertise Level: 
Familiarity with basic email concepts.
Learning Objectives:
Examine the diverse features in Outlook 2007.
Explore the new User Interface.
Explore through various options that can be customized in Outlook 2007.
Effectively create and use signatures.
Basic use of the Calendar and Contacts functions of Outlook 2007.
Basic knowledge of security involving email.


MS Outlook 2007: Intermediate

Date/Time: Monday, November 10, 2008, 2-4 pm

Description: 
The exploration of Outlook 2007 continues with discussion and demonstration of the more intermediate and advanced features available in the program. Email, Calendar, Tasks and other functions will be demonstrated at a higher level to help attendees increase productivity and organization. Course participants will also be shown how to configure Outlook 2007 on their home computer to access various email services and how to utilize more than one email account. Basic functionality of options for Exchange Server users will be explained.

Target Audience: 
Email users who desire more extensive knowledge of Outlook 2007.

Expertise Level: 
Basic understanding of Outlook 2007.

Learning Objectives:
More advanced options for Email, Calendar, Tasks and Contacts. Configuring the Out of Office Assistant, and customizing the User Interface. More complex understanding of how email services work. Basic understanding of Exchange Server options. Intermediate knowledge of email security. How to configure and setup new email accounts.

MS Windows Vista Demo

Dates/Times: Tuesday, October 21, 2008, 2-4 pm

Description:
This workshop will introduce participants to the new features and user interface of Windows Vista, the newest Microsoft operating system. Improvements, changes, tips and tricks will be demonstrated using a typical work environment configuration. For attendees who are interested in using Windows Vista on a personal computer, the different versions of Vista and compatibility with the campus network will be discussed.  

Target Audience:
This workshop will be of particular interest to individuals at EIU who will be utilizing Windows Vista on new computers within the next year either at home or on campus.  

Expertise Level:
Experience using a Windows or Macintosh based computer.  

Learning Objectives
